Keeping safe in hot weather ☀️
With hot weather expected this week, we want to help you stay cool, safe, and comfortable at home.
UK homes are designed to keep heat in, so it’s important to take simple steps to prevent overheating, especially for older people, children, and those with health conditions.
Top tips to keep cool:
- Block out the sun: Close curtains or blinds in sunny rooms during the day to keep heat out.
- Let in cooler air: Keep windows closed during the hottest hours and open them in the early morning or evening (if safe) to let cooler air in.
- Reduce indoor heat: Turn off unused lights and appliances, and avoid using ovens or hobs during the hottest parts of the day.
- Use fans carefully: Fans can help when temperatures are below 35°C, avoid aiming them directly at your body for long periods.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Find cooler spaces: It may be cooler outside in the shade or in a public building (such as places of worship, local libraries, or supermarkets) so consider a visit as a way of cooling down if you are able to safely travel there without putting yourself at more risk from the heat.
- Plan ahead: Try to do more active tasks in the morning or evening.
- Carry water if you’re out and take breaks in shaded or cooler spaces.
Look out for others:
Check in on neighbours, friends, or family members who may struggle in the heat—especially if they live alone.
Small steps can make a big difference.
